This is my first composition for a solo instrument without percussion, as well as being my first time working with digital media. The piece is inspired by President Ronald Reagan’s quoting of a Russian proverb – translated into English as “Trust, but verify.” Using this and other quotes, the piece tells a story of tensions during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, culminating in the destruction of the Berlin Wall. The clarinet largely represents to voice of the everyday person – not that of a political leader or military personnel.
This composition was commissioned and premiered by Dr. Lisa Kachouee.
