The Kindred Elements started off as a duet for two multi-percussionists. After prompting by the commissioning party, I changed one part to a drum set. The piece went through many iterations before I came up with the final product - this inspired the name, as I took the best elements from earlier drafts to make the final piece. A blend of typical drum set-like grooves and more contemporary chamber percussion figures make up the structure of the composition.
This piece features the 3:4 polyrhythm both in individual parts and split between the duo. This piece also includes moments of silence where the music stops before both players continue. This reflects the many gaps and challenges I had when first writing - and later premiering - this piece. Non-verbal communication and a delicate ear are essential.
The Kindred Elements was commissioned by Ethan Linfoot and premiered by Cameron Duncan and Chris Prather.
