      <image:title>Geneva - Marimba solo (5 octave)</image:title>
<image:caption>Geneva was composed in the summer of 2017 following my trip to Europe with the Oklahoma Ambassadors of Music. While in Switzerland, we took a trip to the town of Geneva, named after the lake that occupies the area. I spent the afternoon walking the shoreline of the lake, mesmerized by the beauty of the scenery. In the music, I try to capture the gently flowing of the water on the lake, as well as the majestic mountains that serve as a backdrop. Length: 8 minutes Difficulty: Intermediate</image:caption>

      <image:title>Break Point</image:title>
<image:caption>Break Point is my third duet for percussion and non-percussion instrumentation – a genre that is in desperate need of more repertoire. Break Point is inspired by street busking – an art form where musicians perform out in public on city streets and subways, often with makeshift percussion instruments. The drum set reflects this, with standard drums, but instead of cymbals they are instructed to use an opera gong and a small skillet. The title is a reference to the breaking point of metal, usually by bending until it snaps. In the music, the saxophone has many pitch bends, and the percussionist has the opera gong, another pitch bending instrument. Break Point was premiered by Clayton Garner and Clay Steiner in the spring of 2022. Length: 5 minutes Difficulty: Advanced (Grade 5) Instrumentation: Tenor Saxophone Modified Drum Set: Kick, Snare, High Tom, Medium Tom, Small Skillet, Opera Gong</image:caption>

      <image:title>Trust, But Verify</image:title>
<image:caption>This is my first composition for a solo instrument without percussion, as well as being my first time working with digital media. The piece is inspired by President Ronald Reagan’s quoting of a Russian proverb – translated into English as “Trust, but verify.” Using this and other quotes, the piece tells a story of tensions during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, culminating in the destruction of the Berlin Wall. The clarinet largely represents to voice of the everyday person – not that of a political leader or military personnel. This composition was commissioned and premiered by Dr. Lisa Kachouee. Length: 5 minutes Difficulty: Advanced (Grade 5) Instrumentation: Clarinet in Bb and Electronic Soundscape</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Kindred Elements - Percussion Duet</image:title>
<image:caption>Length: 5 minutes Difficulty: Advanced The Kindred Elements started off as a duet for two multi-percussionists. After prompting by the commissioning party, I changed one part to a drum set. The piece went through many iterations before I came up with the final product - this inspired the name, as I took the best elements from earlier drafts to make the final piece. A blend of typical drum set-like grooves and more contemporary chamber percussion figures make up the structure of the composition. This piece features the 3:4 polyrhythm both in individual parts and split between the duo. This piece also includes moments of silence where the music stops before both players continue. This reflects the many gaps and challenges I had when first writing - and later premiering - this piece. Non-verbal communication and a delicate ear are essential. The Kindred Elements was commissioned by Ethan Linfoot and premiered by Cameron Duncan and Chris Prather.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Cliffside</image:title>
<image:caption>Cliffside was composed my senior year of my ungraduated degree at East Central University. At that time, I felt as if I was standing on the side of a cliff. I was about to take the next step, but I wasn’t sure what that was yet. I could see the many possibilities on the horizon but was afraid to take the leap. Eventually, I figured out my next steps, and learned to enjoy everything in the moment. Cliffside has a few contrasting sections. The first section is the depiction of the majesty of cliff. This is built up across the quartet through the addition of instruments and patterns. The next section is a dance or celebration on top of the cliff. The third section is a reflective moment observing the horizon. Afterward, we return to a variation of the first section, before moving on to the final section. Here I imagine falling from the cliff, but instead of crashing we start soaring through the air. Cliffside was selected as runner up and performed as part of the TorQ Percussion Seminar in 2017. Length: 8 minutes Difficulty: Early Advanced Instrumentation: Vibraphone, Marimba (4.3), Marimba (5), Congas (3), Bongos (2 sets), Toms (3), Kick Drums (2)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Spaced Out</image:title>
<image:caption>Spaced Out was composed in September of 2020 while I was in quarantine at my apartment. The inspiration for the title came from the social distancing that had become standard at the time. Playing off that concept, I spread out the instruments and melodies evenly across the performers, using composite rhythms of the individual parts to form the melodic content. This piece is great for an early to intermediate high school quartet and will focus on balancing and blending similar sounds to form complete melodic lines. At times some parts are trickier than others, but overall, they are even in difficulty from player to player. Length: 3 minutes Difficulty: Intermediate (Grade 3) Instrumentation: 4 Woodblocks (High to Low), 4 Toms (High to Low), Bongos, Snare Drum (Low), Snare Drum (High), Kick Drum (Suspended), Cowbell</image:caption>

      <image:title>Saguaro</image:title>
<image:caption>Saguaro is my fourth duet for percussion and non-percussion instrumentation – a genre that is in desperate need of more repertoire. The piece is inspired by desert environments around the world and named after the iconic saguaro cactus. This duet for Trumpet and Percussion is inspired by a blend of sounds and styles of music found in the Middle East and Central America. Largely based on the Phrygian Dominant Scale, Saguaro starts with a trumpet overture accompanied by drums, presenting thematic material that will resurface later, such as the opening turn of the grace notes, and the hushed "B theme" heard first at measure 13. As the piece develops, we hear the xylophone being utilized as a rhythmic, percussive device before it is used melodically, followed soon by a cacophony of drums and relentless trumpet articulation. The piece ends with a loud, in-your-face trumpet and xylophone section before tying the opening material back into the mix. Saguaro is dedicated to my two friends who premiered the work in the Spring of 2021, trumpeter Sam Gustavson, and percussionist Anna Wheat. Length: 5 minutes Difficulty: Advanced (Grade 5) Instrumentation: Trumpet in Bb with Straight Mute Mounted Kick Drum, Medium-Low Tom, Medium Conga, Bongos, Xylophone, a pair of articulate rattan mallets</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Gorgon's Gaze</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece is about one of my favorite characters in Greek Mythology: Medusa. Medusa is one of the three Gorgons, a creature cursed with snakes for hair, who can turn anyone that looks into her eyes into stone. While this piece does not tell any specific story of Medusa, it does capture the eeriness of her lair, the ferocity of battle, and a moment of reflection to a time before she was cursed. Many of the musical themes in this piece were developed by assigning each letter of the alphabet to a different note, then spelling out certain words with the assigned notes, creating the melody. This is the case for the opening melody heard throughout the piece, spelling out “Medusa.” I am honored to have been selected as the composer in residence for the El Sistema Oklahoma “Alegria” Orchestra for their 2020 season. The performance was postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Gorgon’s Gaze is dedicated to the ensemble and their conductor, Sydney Arrendell. Length: 5 minutes Difficulty: Intermediate (Grade 3) Instrumentation: Fl., Ob., Cl. 1, Cl. 2, Bsn., Hn., Tpt., Tbn., Tba., Vln. 1, Vln. 2, Vla., Vc., Db. Percussion (5): Timp. <image:caption>Perceptions is my second duet for percussion and non-percussion instrumentation – a genre that is in desperate need of more repertoire. This piece was commissioned and premiered by Duo Rodinia. The overall concept of this suite is a perception of thought in the world around you. As such, each movement is titled after what I consider to be a way of perceiving the world around you. I. Reflection/Motion - This movement is about quietly reflecting on the world around you, followed by putting those reflective thoughts into motion. II. Resolution - This movement is about sticking true to what you believe, remaining resolute and unwavering. This movement features prepared vibraphone, though with just one small adjustment. III. Serenity - This movement is about basking in the calm, no matter how frequent or infrequent it is in your life. Length: 7 minutes total Difficulty: Advanced (Grade 5) Instrumentation: Clarinet in Bb Vibraphone with variable speed motor - In the second movement, the vibraphone must be prepared by muting the low C with a large eraser.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pyroclastic Surge</image:title>
<image:caption>My first composition for Concert Band, this piece is inspired by volcanism, specifically the destructive force of Mount Vesuvius. The form of the piece is adapted from the two stages of a volcano – active and dormant. The active stage is destructive, explosive, and loud, while the dormant stage shows peace, growth, and warmth, but with an ever-looming sense of doom to return. This piece was commissioned by Southridge Junior High and their director, Rick Street. Length: 5 minutes Difficulty: Intermediate+ (Grade 3.5) Instrumentation: Fl. 1, Fl. 2, Ob., Bsn., Cl. 1, Cl. 2, B. Cl., Al. Sax. 1, Al. Sax. 2, Ten. <image:title>Suite for Timpani and Trombone</image:title>
<image:caption>Length: 10 minutes total Difficulty: Early Advanced (Grade 4) Instrumentation: Trombone with straight mute 4 Timpani with mutes - Pair of general timpani mallets - Pair of staccato timpani mallets - Pair of duel sided timpani mallets (Wood/Felt) This is my first duet for percussion and non-percussion instrumentation – a genre that is in desperate need of more repertoire. Each of the four movements explores a style of music highlighted by the duo. I. Fanfare Thematic and bouncy, this movement pays tribute to both instruments’ roles in fanfare music. The trombone plays the main melodic motif while the timpani punctuate in a characteristic manner and takes over the melody on occasion. II. Waltz Light and melodic, this movement passes the main theme between the players, first with the trombone, then later on the timpani. This movement can prove challenging for the timpanist - tuning changes are required often to play the melody. III. Dirge and Dance This movement is split into two main parts – the dirge, and the dance – and features some extended techniques and use of mutes on both instruments. The dirge is a slow funeral march. The chaotic dance that follows is in a mixed meter, with muted glissandi in the trombone part and muffled, rapid notes in the timpani. The timpanist is also required to play with duel-sided mallets – with wood on one side and felt on the other. The movement ends with a return to the introduction material, with a surprise effect in the final measures. IV. Finale Loud and exciting, the final movement shows off the loud and aggressive side of the duo. The timpanist provides the rhythmic drive with relentless sixteenth notes throughout the movement, while the trombone plays the melody. Halfway through the piece, a dramatic and slow crescendo occurs with a gradual timpani glissando and upward trombone movement. The piece then concludes with a return to the main theme.</image:caption>
