Pyroclastic Surge (2021)

My first composition for Concert Band, this piece is inspired by volcanism, specifically the destructive force of Mount Vesuvius. The form of the piece is adapted from the two stages of a volcano – active and dormant. The active stage is destructive, explosive, and loud, while the dormant stage shows peace, growth, and warmth, but with an ever-looming sense of doom to return.

This piece was commissioned by Southridge Junior High and their director, Rick Street.
