Cliffside (2018)

Cliffside was composed my senior year of my ungraduated degree at East Central University. At that time, I felt as if I was standing on the side of a cliff. I was about to take the next step, but I wasn’t sure what that was yet. I could see the many possibilities on the horizon but was afraid to take the leap. Eventually, I figured out my next steps, and learned to enjoy everything in the moment.

Cliffside has a few contrasting sections. The first section is the depiction of the majesty of cliff. This is built up across the quartet through the addition of instruments and patterns. The next section is a dance or celebration on top of the cliff. The third section is a reflective moment observing the horizon. Afterward, we return to a variation of the first section, before moving on to the final section. Here I imagine falling from the cliff, but instead of crashing we start soaring through the air.

Cliffside was selected as runner up and performed as part of the TorQ Percussion Seminar in 2017.
